Venice is one of the most unique cities in the world — and one that requires very specific packing decisions. The combination of constant walking, 400+ bridges to climb, humid summers, and Italy’s style expectations means getting your Venice packing list right will make or break your trip.
The Most Important Item: Footwear
This deserves its own section. Venice’s streets are uneven stone, its bridges have steps, and you’ll walk 15,000–25,000 steps a day. The wrong shoes will ruin your trip within hours. Pack: leather loafers (the single best Venice shoe), white leather sneakers, flat leather sandals for summer, and ankle boots for spring/autumn. Never pack stilettos or flip-flops for sightseeing.

St. Mark’s Basilica strictly enforces its dress code. Shoulders and knees must be covered or you’ll be turned away at the door — no exceptions. Pack a lightweight scarf that can cover both. Other Venice churches (Frari, SS Giovanni e Paolo) have the same expectation though less strictly enforced.

- Wheeled luggage larger than cabin size — impossible on Venice’s bridges and steps
- High heels — bridges have steps, stones are uneven, heels get stuck in grates
- Flip-flops for sightseeing — not appropriate for restaurants and looks out of place
- Shorts at churches — keep shorts for casual daytime only
